Villa Valcerasa
The first building here was a 14th century convent built by followers of St Francis of Assisi, a place of quiet reflection and prayer on the principal road between San Severino and the holy hilltop town of Loreto. In the 15th century it became a guesthouse for pilgrims and high-ranking prelates. In 1449 Pope Nicolo V (1397-1455) stayed, the ruler of the Papal States from 1447 until his death in 1455 and the first Pope to visit the ‘Santa Casa’ at Loreto.
In March 1523 the Duchess of Camerino, Caterina Cybo (1501-1557), granddaughter of Lorenzo de Medici — Italian statesman, de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic, and the most powerful patron of Renaissance culture in Italy visited, the rooms decorated with rich drapes and furnishings especially for the occasion.
In the 18th century the site was rebuilt and transformed into the present day Villa — complete with chapel and bell tower — and divided amongst cousins after the second world war. This project is to rescue the Villa, restore it once again as a place of peaceful reflection and wellbeing, a unique wedding venue, heritage site and luxury holiday accommodation to fund the sustainable conservation of the estate.
